On 3/17 I was attending CZ & Dan Wesson Shooting Day at Hartford Gun Club in CT. We have created this event to get as many people familiar with CZ firearms as possible. Some might wonder why such a random location. Well here is little history on start of my career.
I played professionally in Czechoslovakia and also participated in the international hockey tournaments with country’s national team. That is where scouts for many NHL teams “discovered” my playing ability. After couple of years playing for the Czechoslovak National Team I was drafted by the Hartford Whalers. The franchise does not exist anymore, it was relocated to Carolina, but that is where I got my start in North America.
It was almost two years ago when a family friend visited us in Wyoming. He is a member of the club and a lifelong skeet and trap shooter. We went to our local range to introduce him to pistol shooting. He could count on one hand the number of opportunities he had in his life to shoot good quality pistols. I brought along CZ 75 B, CZ 75 Kadet and the awesome Dan Wesson Valor. These pistols could be favorite ones in anybody’s gun safe. We had a good time and talk about organizing an event in his club where members could come out and enjoy test firing CZ and Dan Wesson line of pistols. With great help from CZ-USA and their local sales rep we made it happen on 3/17.
The event was designed to accommodate as many shooters as possible in the safest environment possible. It is not an easy task, but can be done with solid effort from everybody involved. My personal opinion is that without the outmost safety we are only giving reason to non gun owners to criticize our passion for this sport. Hartford Gun Club, the oldest gun club in CT,has a nice indoor pistol range. We set up a display table with brand new models of Dan Wesson CCO cal. 45 ACP, Dan Wesson Valor cal. 45 ACP, Dan Wesson Heritage cal. 45 ACP, CZ P-07 cal. 9mm Luger, CZ 75 SP-01 Phantom cal. 9mm Luger, CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical cal. 9mm and CZ 85 in 9mm. Each member had to sign CZ provided waiver and hand it to one of the range officers in exchange for a ticket. One part of the ticket was put in the bucket for later drawing. The winner got brand new PO-7 Duty 9mm. Same pistol in .40 cal is my favorite carry piece. The other part of the ticket served as a claim check for any pistol the guests wanted to shoot and 20 rounds of ammo. Everything at No charge. If the guests wanted to shoot more, they could buy more ammo from the CZ rep at cost. Once the guest claimed the pistol of his choice, he/she walked to nearest available range officer and got the ammo and a magazine at the bay. The emphasis was put on good flow and safety. Many people shot multiple pistols and many people shot the same pistol more than once.
It was a great day and responses ranged from: “I never thought CZ made such nice pistols” to “I knew CZ made nice but this nice!” Total of 150 people attended and about 4000 rounds were shot that day with NO malfunction, not a single little failure. These pistols were all brand new out of the box. No cleaning, oiling or disassembly first. Just pick it up, point and shoot. Just the way I like it. We all had very good time talking about all kinds of shooting. Some people were accomplished skeet shooters, some great pistol shooters and some shot pistols for the first time but everybody enjoyed just being out there.
Last I want to thank Hartford Gun Club for having CZ-USA there and giving us opportunity to show quality craftsmanship that goes back many generations. I also want to thank to all members who came out, especially the ones who dedicated themselves to being safety range officers. All In all great day at the range and if you thinking you would like to have us at your range after reading this, please contact Alice at CZ-USA (firstname.lastname@example.org).
